Dylan Nelson came to us with a great vision for a character! He wanted them to be a powerful warlock chosen by The Great One themselves to be the next leader of the village. Here's a completed story I came up with for him!
Deep in the woods, obscured by the thick trees and hidden within the shadows, lies an ancient and powerful village. The village held great magical powers and extensive knowledge given to people who were chosen by The Great One themselves. A special grimoire was passed down from generation to generation, granting the owner the title, Sooth Saying Visionary. This person was considered the greatest warlock in the tribe until the current one passed away or became 'unfit' in the eyes of The Great One, who stripped them of their powers and handed it down to the next generation.
Within the tribe, the people desperately want someone within their family to be the next Sooth Sayer. They chose life partners based on genetics, hoping their offspring will be the next chosen one, destined for greatness. All the children are inspected at the age of 3 by one of the leaders to see if they have what it takes to be the next Sooth Sayer. If the leader says they're good, the children are sent to a private school within the village where they train on their athletic abilities, magical power, and intelligence. Usually, the Sooth Sayer is chosen from these children around the age of young adulthood, all thanks to this prestigious school.
Erin lived a normal life within the tribe. At the age of 3, he was determined to be 'unfit' for the school and has led an average life since. Throughout his childhood, he hoped that something in him would change. That something would click or spark and he'd be the next Sooth Sayer. Unfortunately, that never happened.
Once Erin reached his young adulthood, he decided he would attend the graduation from the well-known school and see who would be the next Sooth Sayer. As he reached the massive pantheon, he thought back on his life and where he was headed. He had accepted the fact that he would live an average life as a merchant with his father, never destined for greatness like the ones from the school.
Crowds filtered in and filled the seating area. There was an electric vibe in the air, crackling with excitement and wonder. Everyone was gossiping on who they thought it would be. Almost everyone in the tribe believed it would be the powerful son of one of the leaders. It seemed like he was born to become the Sooth Sayer. The lights dimmed as 20 students filtered onto the large circular platform, standing in rows of 5. Everyone cheered for them, the crowd wild with excitement, as the 10 leaders came in a single file line.
The current owner of the grimoire limped onto the stage, clearly wounded from a great battle. Her time had come to an end as she handed it off to one of the leaders. She gave a great speech, which Erin hardly listened to. Something about great power and how happy she was to be given the opportunity to have it, blah, blah, blah. The ritual went on as usual; the leaders blessed the students and the grimoire, put it on a large pedestal, and began the chant which called on the Great One to offer them knowledge as to who the next Sooth Sayer will be.
The crowd was dead silent as they finished their prayer. Moments passed and the leaders whispered to each other, confused looks on their faces. The students became anxious, fidgeting as they awaited the answer. One of the leaders turned around and cleared his throat.
"Well, something we never expected has been given to us. The next Sooth Sayer isn't within the students," he said as anger erupted from the students and confusion streamed from the crowd. The leaders held up their hands in a call for silence to continue on.
"Instead, there is someone who we have overlooked. Someone that will undoubtedly be the greatest and most powerful Sooth Sayer Visionary we've ever seen." He paused to let that sink in.
"Erin (last name), please step forth."
The crowd was silent with confusion. Erin's heart almost stopped. Surely that can't be correct. There's no way! He thought as he sat frozen in shock. He shook his head and started towards the leaders. People began to whisper in confusion, anger, and disbelief as he reached them.
"This young man has been called upon by The Great One and is destined to be the greatest warlock this tribe has ever seen. Please take this grimoire in acceptance of this important task." One of the leaders held the book out to Erin, which he gently grasped in his hands.
As soon as he did, power surged into Erin, causing loud thunder to rumble in the distance as powerful magical forces made the hair on everyone's neck stand up straight. It felt right in his hands like he was meant to be there. The leaders nodded in approval and turned him around to face the crowd. After a brief pause, they erupted into wild cheers.
There was no doubt about it. Erin was to become the most powerful and most knowledgeable Sooth Sayer Visionary this tribe has ever seen.
The original idea was given to us by Dylan Nelson. It was revised and edited it by, Bards of Lore. We don't take any credit for the character or the idea!
