Adam Fix messaged us on Facebook with a few ideas of a character for an upcoming campaign. He knew that he wanted his character to be a cleric within the Grave domain, hate the undead, and worship a Voodoo Witch Doctor. So, we took these ideas and whipped them up into a small story!
Ohla was born and raised in a society ruled by religion. The people of the town believed that the gods and goddesses of the universe were the cause of everything that happens in life. Even small things, such as livestock passing away, were things that the gods and goddesses willed into existence.
His father and mother were heavily involved in the church and pushed Ohla to the idea of priesthood at an early age. He became heavily involved in the church thanks to them. He spent all his time pouring over religious books and learning the ways of priesthood. Once he was old enough, he was accepted as an apprentice to the head priest.
A few years passed and everything was perfect! He now had a loving wife and his job was flourishing. One day, Ohla woke up and was headed to the church like always, but something felt off. Even his wife agreed and begged him to stay home. But, he brushed it off as just something weird and headed to work.
The day continued like normal, nothing unusual happening despite the growing pit of dread in his stomach. Suddenly, a local merchant woman burst through the doors of the church. She was frantic, screaming about the dead walking again and how the town was being destroyed. Fearing the worst, Ohla took off outside. When he came out, everything was just as the woman described. The town was on fire with black smoke filling the air. The sharp scent of blood wafted towards him and heart-stopping screams bounced off the buildings. A deep moan came from his right and he spun around to meet face to face with the undead. The corpse was staggering towards him, hands outstretched, reaching for his flesh. He grabbed the nearest rock and threw it at the undead as hard as he could. It stopped for a second and Ohla took this time to make it to his home.
When he arrived, he froze in fear. His house was destroyed with broken windows, doors off their hinges, and things are thrown about. He rushed in, calling his wife's name. When he came into the house, the metallic scent of blood filled his airways, making him stop and gag. His wife's lifeless body was ripped apart in their living room. Ohla crumbled to his knees, sobbing and screaming hysterically to the gods.
"Why?! I've done nothing but worship and abide by your every rule! I've given my life to you! Why have you forsaken me," he screamed into the empty house, his voice mixing into the other hundreds of screams coming from all around him.
In the violence and death happening around him, a voice from the deep began whispering in his ear. "Ohla," he creaked, "Ohla, the town needs you. Your wife needs you to take revenge. Abandon your traditional ways of magic and lean into me."
In a fit of despair and rage, Ohla stood up, fire burning in his eyes. "Okay, give me the power. Show me the way," he yelled into the air. Suddenly new magic surged through him. It was dark and mysterious, different than the lighter magic he got from his other gods. A cackling laugh sounded through the air as Ohla sprinted out of the house, determined to rid his town of the undead.
Hours later, covered in blood that wasn't his own, the final undead was still. He fell into a heap on the ground, exhausted from fighting with the able citizens of the town. The voice emerged again, "Yes child, you have done me well. There are many injustices in the world caused by the demons of the underworld. Will you aid me in exterminating this dark magic from the world?"
Ohla nodded, a new vengeance for the demise of the undead surging in him. He would stop at nothing until this world was rid of the evils that lurk within it. With the help of any adventurers he came across, he would stop at nothing until he completed his goal.
The original idea was created by Adam Fix. It was revised and edited it by us, Bards of Lore. We take no credit in creating this character or the ideas listed above!
